Rumor: Could J.J. Abrams return to direct Star Wars: Episode IX?

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS fell to J.J. Abrams. STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII will go to Rian Johnson. However STAR WARS: EPISODE IX currently has no one at the helm. It was thought that Rian Johnson might tackle EPISODE IX after he completed EPISODE VIII but nothing was certain. Now it appears as though a different name has popped up in regards to EPISODE IX and it’s a name we’re already familiar with.

According to Latino-Review J.J. Abrams could very well be the front-runner for directing duties on STAR WARS: EPISODE IX. The site mentions that those at Disney who have been privy to his footage from STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS have been very happy with what they’ve seen so far. That studio confidence could go a long way to getting him the job, should he want it.

Given how little we've seen of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, I can’t really say whether having him return would be a good thing or not. Part of what has made this new Star Wars saga appealing is the variety of people involved. Personally I’d like to see another new director handle EPISODE IX with the hope of giving each installment its own flavour.

STAR WARS: EPISODE IX won’t be hitting theaters until 2019 so that still leaves us plenty of time to obsess over every little detail.

Would you be open to J.J. Abrams returning? If not, who would you rather see direct STAR WARS: EPISODE IX?
