Congratulations, social media, you’ve struck again. Another actor has left a social media platform after being harassed by trolls, and this time it was Australian star Ruby Rose. The JOHN WICK 2 and THE MEG actress has now left Twitter after being trolled by people who found issue with her being cast as Kate Kane/Batwoman in the CW’s universe of DC shows. Though folks were probably coming out of the woodwork with a litany of unnecessary, cruel things to say, Rose cited attacks on her sexuality as a big reason for her leaving.

Rose’s casting was announced last week, so it didn’t take long before the trolls came out en mass using the hashtag #RecastBatwoman to try and get the CW to hire someone else to play the character. People were also citing the fact Rose is not Jewish (Kane is) as a reason why she is the "wrong actress" for the part. Before leaving Rose sent out a post (via THR) to her then over 1 million followers calling for people to support each other rather than judge and belittle.
“Where on earth did ‘Ruby is not a lesbian therefore she can’t be Batwoman’ come from — has to be the funniest most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read. I came out at 12? And have for the past 5 years had to deal with ‘she’s too gay’ how do y’all flip it like that? I didn’t change. I wish we would all support each other and our journeys. When women and when minorities join forces we are unstoppable… when we tear each other down it’s much more hurtful than from any group. But hey, love a challenge I just wish women and the LGBT community supported each other more, My wish was we were all a little kinder and more supportive of each other… Sending everyone my love and gratitude, it’s been a rollercoaster of a year, this month especially. I am looking forward to getting more than 4 hours of sleep and to break from Twitter to focus all my energy on my next 2 projects. If you need me, I’ll be on my Bat Phone.”

Rose still uses Instagram but has since shut off the ability for people to comment on posts. She now joins a group that includes STAR WARS actresses Kelly Marie Tran and Daisy Ridley and STRANGER THING’s Millie Bobby Brown after they too left social media after being constantly harassed. Unfortunately, as people seem to be heading to social media to troll, creep on, and verbally abuse celebrities for any reason in increasing mass, this probably won’t be the last time someone has to leave a platform (or all of them). The good thing is that Rose seems to have identified the silver lining in this very grey cloud, which is that she can focus on preparing to be a f**king superhero, which she gets to do while being in the number one movie in America – if not the world.
