I know November 29th is officially INFINITY WAR day, but so far today is shaping up to be a great day for trailers for all kinds of movies. On one hand we have the epicness of AVENGERS, and on the other hand, there’s the first footage of the gorgeous MARY MAGDALENE with Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix. The former plays the title role of Mary Magdalene, and the latter plays Jesus Christ in the film from LION director Garth Davis in this big screen story of the duo’s relationship, which has been debated over between Biblical scholars for, well, a few years. Anyone who saw LION can tell this is from Davis as well, and the film itself looks like a compelling character study of two of the most iconic figures in history. And, it should be said, Joaquin always looks great with a beard.

The movie was supposed to come out this year from The Weinstein Company, but due to the Harvey Weinstein scandal Davis went out for a new distributor. Now Sony will release it domestically and Universal will internationally, a deal that was not made until this month. It's a shame the movie isn't coming out this awards season. Cinematographer Craig Fraser, who was nominated for an Oscar for LION, does another bang-up job, and together he and Davis have filmed a movie that looks intimate and engaging, which is something we haven't seen in a Jesus story in some time. I'm not a religious man, but this looks fascinating purely from a cinematic standpoint, and Phoenix and Mara look like they'll do a terrific job in the roles.
MARY MAGDALENE hits the U.K. on March 16, 2018 and the U.S. March 30, 2018.
