Director Todd Haynes has a penchant for making poignant dramas set in different eras. From the excellent FAR FROM HEAVEN and VELVET GOLDMINE to his recent HBO film MILDRED PIERCE, Haynes has shown romantic relationships in unexpected places. His latest film, CAROL, continues that with a passionate love affair between Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett.
CAROL debuted at the Cannes Film Festival and a new featurette showcasing interviews with Haynes, Blanchett, and Mara along with clips from the film has debuted online. In it, those involved talk about the efforts that went into telling such a powerful story.
In 1950s New York, a young woman in her 20s working as a department-store clerk falls for an older, married woman.
Also starring Kyle Chandler and Sarah Paulson, CAROL is adapted from the novel by Patricia Highsmith. Highsmith also wrote THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY which features a much darker, romantic obsession. Both stories have similarities but CAROL looks to have a lot of powerhouse performances that should garner recognition come awards season.
CAROL opens in theaters on December 18th.
