In not so shocking news, it is now official that MGM and Warner Bros. are partnering with Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin on a reboot of their sci-fi hit STARGATE. Emmerich is set to direct with the idea to possibly turn the new film into the planned trilogy Emmerich mentioned late last year.
MGM chairman and CEO Gary Barber said:
"We couldn’t be more excited to once again partner with Roland and Dean, the world-class creators of the original Stargate, to bring their reinvigorated vision of this wildly popular property to audiences of multiple generations, Stargate is one of the biggest titles in MGM’s vast library, and we look forward to adding this great franchise to our slate."
The original film starred Kurt Russell and James Spader and revolves around a team of U.S. military professionals who discover and enter a wormhole to another planet. The movie grossed more than $200 million worldwide, and that was 20 years ago folks.
What's not surprising is that it's getting remade, what's surprising is that Emmerich is doing the work again. It’s a pretty good sci-fi adventure flick and actually worked better as a TV series if you ask me, so why return to this Emmerich? It was just earlier today when we told you that INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 aka ID4EVER is currently getting a rewrite and already has a 2016 release date.
The dude must have cloned himself. Emmerich is clearly passionate about the project it being his baby and all; I will be interested in what he does with new technology and what he might want to correct form the first film. Do you ever have those days where you just throw your hands up in the air and wave them around like you really do care? Why so many reboots?!
Do you have any hopes and dreams for this remake?
