Sure, Godzilla is great and all, but I've always had a big soft-spot for Rodan, the enormous flying Pteranodon-like kaiiju whose set to make a reappearance in the upcoming GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS. While speaking with Empire, GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS director Michael Dougherty teased that Rodan is a "bit of a rogue… you never quite know where his loyalties lie." A new photo of from the sequel was also released which finds Rodan about to take down some aircraft.
Michael Dougherty also promised that Rodan will be leaving plenty of destruction in his wake. "Godzilla’s more of a lumbering, plodding presence; it takes him a couple of days to destroy a city like Tokyo. Rodan can level it without even thinking. He’s this massive A-bomb, so there’s a speed and ferocity he brings," Dougherty said. We've certainly got our fair share of enormous films hitting theaters this year, such as AVENGERS: ENDGAME and STAR WARS: EPISODE IX, but GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS might just take the cake for me. I've been waiting for this one for a while. Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah all in one film? Yes please.
The official synopsis for GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS:
The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS will hit theaters on May 31, 2019.
