I just caught the beginning of this puppy on cable tonite (love that grainy look and the whole Philadelphia background too) and COULD NOT turn away. And yeah, I was blubbering like a child when Rocky was stumbling to get up in the 14th round as Adrian made her way into the forum. Wow…fuckin’ great movie! Inspirational, engaging characters (Rocky & Adrian are cute as heck but what about Mickey and Paulie, Adrian’s bum brother?! Great shtuff!!). Some awesome performances here and a film that truly stands the test of time.
Sure, the boxing scenes aren’t exactly the best boxing sequences that we’ve ever seen on film (and the final fight lasts about 5 minutes), but this movie’s got something that a lot of other films don’t and that’s HEART, BABY….HEART!!!
Rocky, you son of a bitch, if you could go all the way against the champion of the world, then I could get up in the morning, drink 5 eggs and punch the shit out of my worries, I’ll tell you that much!!!
Credit Stallone for sticking to his guns on this movie and check out the many cool trivia tidbits about the film here (Ryan O’Neal was offered the part of Rocky?!? What the fuck?!?).
PS: When I visited Philadelphia a few years ago with my buds, I was that one asshole who ran up the stairs like Rock and jumped up and down when I got to the top. My friends taped it and laughed at me. All I could say is “I’m not just another bum from the neighbourhood!!!”
