Yo, Adrian! The entire Rocky series, in addition to the Creed trilogy, is coming to 4K Blu-ray. As per TheDiscFather, Warner Bros. is set to release a nine-film box set on the 4K Ultra HD format that will surely leave many fans down for the count.
While the first four Rocky movies were previously released on 4K earlier this year as part of the Rocky: The Knockout Collection, this will be the first time that every Rocky / Creed movie will be collected as one on the format. Addressing a concern on whether or not this box set would include all of the Rocky movies, TheDiscFather said that “All 6” would indeed be included. These are: 1976’s Rocky, 1979’s Rocky II, 1982’s Rocky III, 1985’s Rocky IV, 1990’s Rocky V, and 2006’s Rocky Balboa. In addition to these films, the box set would also feature the most recent Creed trilogy, which spans 2015-2013.
To date, the Rocky and Creed movies have grossed around $950 million domestically, with the most recent entry, this year’s Creed III proving the top earner, knocking out Rocky IV from the top spot. It is currently in the top 10 highest-grossing movies of 2023 so far.
One raised issue — one we’ve seen before in movie series box sets such as the one planned for Rocky / Creed — is that the 4K collection will likely be outdated at some point in the future, as more projects are circling the ring. Regardless of whether they focus directly on Adonis Creed or not, they’re still part of the shared universe and thus should be housed in the same box set. However, since it doesn’t say “Complete Collection” on the box, we can’t really fault Warner Bros. here.
No specifics have yet to be unveiled by Warner Bros. regarding technicalities, bonus features or versions on this 4K release of the Rocky and Creed movies. While the inclusion of Rocky V and Rocky Balboa are certainly perks, hopefully fans also get the director’s cut of Rocky IV…
