Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling teaser brings the wacky wallaby to Netflix

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Back in the day, I was all about ROCKO'S MODERN LIFE. Originally airing from 1993-1996 the Nickelodeon animated series revolving around the adventures of an Australian wallaby named Rocko and his two companions, Heffer and Filburt, was the perfect compliment to programs like THE REN & STIMPY SHOW, RUGRATS, DOUG, AAAH!!! REAL MONSTERS! and HEY ARNOLD! Like many of Nickelodeon's animated offerings of the 1990s, watching ROCKO'S MODERN LIFE often felt like you were getting away with something. I say this because I recall the show being chock-full of adult humor, including double entendres, nods to R-rated cinema, naughty nudist colony antics, and of course, biting satirical social commentary. This all floated under the radar of parents who'd assumed that the show was nothing more than a harmless delight for their little ones, but oh, if they only knew.

So why are we even talking about ROCKO'S MODERN LIFE? Well, it's because Netflix is poised to debut a brand-new film featuring the show's iconic characters called ROCKO'S MODERN LIFE: STATIC CLING.

Here's the official plot synopsis:

After being in space for around 20 years, Rocko and his friends attempt to conform to an even more modern life in O-Town, where coffee shops are on every corner, food trucks offer multi-layered tacos, touch-screen O-Phones are being upgraded on a near-constant basis, an instant-print kiosk has replaced Rocko's old job at Kind-of-a-Lot-O-Comics, and radioactive energy drinks turn their consumers into mutants.

Created by Joe Murray, produced by Nickelodeon, and co-written by Murray, Doug Lawrence and Martin Olson, ROCKO'S MODERN LIFE: STATIC CLING will catapult the beloved series into modern times, where the worrisome wallaby and his friends must adapt to today's tech-driven society. With mutants running amok and O-Town being gentrified for an energy drinking, fast-paced public, there's no telling what manner of shenanigans will ensue.

Directing the feature are Joe Murray and Cosmo Segurson, with additional writing being contributed by Serguson, Dan Becker and Tom Smith.

What's old will become new again when ROCKO'S MODERN LIFE: STATIC CLING arrives on Netflix come August 9.
