Many were underwhelmed by the first trailer for Jose Padilha‘s ROBOCOP starring Joel Kinnaman, Michael Keaton, Gary Oldman, and Samuel L. Jackson. I can admit it looks cool but very superficial. From what I can see it is a generic and glossy take on the classic Paul Verhoeven movie. But, maybe I am wrong and we will be pleasantly surprised when it hits theaters next year.
To go along with the trailer we now have a look at the official teaser poster for ROBOCOP. Joel Kinnaman takes center stage in the sleek, black suit and glowing red visor. I don’t know why, but this reminds me a hell of a lot of an Apple advertisement. I wonder if Alex Murphy gets WiFi?
In 2028, multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and honest cop doing his best to fight crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured by a car bomb outside his home, OmniCorp utilize their knowledge in robotics to save Murphy’s life. Murphy returns to the streets of his city with new abilities and issues a regular man has never had to face before.
Kinnaman was quite good on the recently cancelled THE KILLING as well as the Swedish crime flick SNABBA CASH. The rest of the cast here is solid, so I don’t know why I am so underwhelmed by the movie. Maybe it is because nothing can live up to the original ROBOCOP, but I kind of wish the trailer got me a little more excited.
ROBOCOP opens February 7, 2014.
