Last month we learned when the POWER RANGERS reboot will be hitting theaters, but unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your thoughts on the filmmaker), Lionsgate and Saban won't be making the movie with Roberto Orci as the executive producer. Deadline is reporting Orci (who came up with the story) has left the film because he's going to be a little busy directing STAR TREK 3, which last week we found out might start shooting within the next six months.
Deadline says Roberto Orci dropping out of POWER RANGERS won't have an impact on the film's release date, and it's still scheduled to open in 2016. The site also says screenwriters Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz are staying with the project, and will continue to work on the script for POWER RANGERS.
If I had to choose between directing STAR TREK 3 and executive producing a POWER RANGERS reboot, I'd probably do the same thing. Still not pleased Roberto Orci will be behind the camera for the next Star Trek movie, but I'm glad he'll be able to focus on his first feature film as a director, and not have to worry about what's going on with POWER RANGERS.
POWER RANGERS will be in theaters on July 22, 2016, and STAR TREK 3 will likely be released sometime in 2016 as well.
