Robert Zemeckis in talks to direct sci-fi thriller Ares for Warner Bros

It's been over twenty years since Robert Zemeckis last dabbled in the world of science fiction, and according to THR, he's set to return to the genre as he's currently in final negotiations to direct ARES, a sci-fi thriller set at at Warner Bros.

ARES has been scripted by Geneva Robertson-Dworet (CAPTAIN MARVEL), and the story has been described as a genre-bending tale which follows "an astronaut whose space capsule crash lands in an African desert. As he rushes to reunite with his family, it is revealed that the mission was part of a larger conspiracy and that he may be carrying a secret that could forever change the world." I'm into that. In addition to directing ARES, Robert Zemeckis will also produce. The director is currently in post-production on THE WITCHES, an adaptation of the Roald Dahl novel for Warner Bros., and Zemeckis is also set to direct the live-action adaptation of PINOCCHIO for Disney, although THR says that both PINOCCHIO and ARES are being developed at the same time, so it's not yet clear which will move forward first.

THE WITCHES stars Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, Stanley Tucci, and Chris Rock, and is set to hit theaters on October 9, 2020.
