Robert Rodriguez is certainly a director who knows his way around science-fiction and action films. With movies like SIN CITY and THE FACULTY under his belt, the Texas native has staked a claim in both genres over the last twenty-five years or so. And with the success of this year's severely underrated ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL (you can read Joblo's reviews here and here), it's clear he's able to navigate between both. Consequently, fans of the PLANET TERROR director, should be pleased at this next news, as Rodriguez's latest project has finally found a home.
Rodriguez's next film will be the sci-fi action movie HYPNOTIC. The script comes courtesy of the filmmaker himself who co-wrote the picture with Max Borenstein (KONG: SKULL ISLAND). Solstice Studios and Studio 8 will produce the movie with Solstice handling distribution rights and Studio 8 possibly co-financing the upcoming project.
HYPNOTIC, "follows a detective who becomes entangled in a mystery involving his missing daughter and a secret government program, while investigating a string of impossible high-end heists." The project is already moving along at a steady pace with several unknown actors and actresses in talks for potential roles at this time. HYPNOTIC is set to start filming early next year with Rodriguez regulars John Graham and Guy Danella set to produce.
Secret government programs? Missing children? High-end heists? Sounds like quite the interesting genre mashup. About the only thing it's missing is Giorgio A. Tsoukalos jumping out and saying, "Aliens!" In all seriousness the premise sounds mildly interesting and with Rodriguez at the helm, it's certain to have a distinct flair and style.
