Director Robert Rodriguez wants everyone to know that he's fully aware that there is a desire to get Machete Kills in Space made because fans haven't stopped asking for it since Machete Kills was released in 2013.
Rodriguez admits to "Discussing Film" that he had never planned to make a cosmic sequel called Machete Kills Again…in Space and that he hoped the trailer would be enough to please fans of the B-movie franchise. He realized this was far from the truth as the years have gone on and he says that fans still advocate seeing interstellar adventures featuring Danny Trejo's titular character:
"We tried to make it in the trailer. We said: let's just make the trailer. That will satisfy people because they'll see enough of it in the trailer. They'll go, 'Okay I already saw that movie.' But no, they still keep asking anyway (laughs)!"
The first Machete, released in 2010, follows the title character after being set-up and betrayed by the man who hired him to assassinate a Texas Senator. The ex-Federale then launches a brutal rampage of revenge against his former boss for the betrayal. The sequel, Machete Kills, picks up with Trejo's character as he's recruited by the U.S. President to stop an arms dealer and a revolutionary. Both films were helmed by Robert Rodriguez and featured a stacked cast that includes Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Mel Gibson, Antonio Banderas, Michelle Rodriguez, Don Johnson, Steven Seagal, Cheech Marin, and Charlie Sheen.
Machete Kills in Space was teased during the second movie as a fake trailer which called the project a "Coming Attraction." Considering the B-movie sensibilities of the first two films, fans didn't think it was too off base to expect Machete to go to space and that's why so many fans still desire it. Actor Danny Trejo is also aware of the fan demand and he once said he would be more than willing to write the film himself just to see it get made. Trejo stated "Machete, Machete Kills, if Robert would ever get off his ass, he'd write Machete Kills in Space! I might write it (laughs)."
