PREDATORS has been putting up respectable numbers at the box office so far. It’s made $42 million in the states and another $37 million overseas. As it only cost approximately $40 million, 80 mil in the bank isn’t too shabby (and it’s sure to do well on DVD and Blu-ray).
The question has been, does its “okay” box office take make it worthy of a sequel? According to Robert Rodriguez, Part 2 is already being discussed.
“[The studio] said, ‘Let’s do some other ones. What other story ideas do you have?'” Rodriguez told IGN. “Because it was like, let’s test out the market with this one. They really wanted it to be pretty contained, pretty scaled-back. They didn’t want to put too many of the ideas into it that we could save for a second one. So we could see what the appetite was, because the bigger movie would actually be what comes following that. That kind of sets up a new storyline, new location and world, and then you can really go crazy from there.”
“Contained” and “scaled-back” are two terms I definitely associate with PREDATORS. While I enjoyed it well enough, it didn’t give me the goods I was hoping for. My biggest complaint was, why set it on an alien planet if that planet looks just like Earth? So perhaps Rodriguez will be able to incorporate some of those bigger ideas and “go crazy”. I’d welcome it, how about you?
