The casting for SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR continues to heat up, as director Robert Rodriguez has now confirmed that Bruce Willis will be back for the much-anticipated sequel. In the first SIN CITY, Willis played Hartigan, a cop sworn to protect Nancy Callahan, the stripper with the heart of gold played by Jessica Alba. Hartigan’s fate may leave some scratching their heads on how Willis could return, but since SIN CITY jumps around the timeline of events, there’s obviously plenty of room for Hartigan to reappear.
Rodriguez, speaking to MTV, dropped the news of Willis back in the cast, as well as some filming details, including the use of 3D and more details on Joseph Gordon-Levitt‘s role in the film. Scan below for the details.
On what they’ve shot so far:
“The only story we’ve shot out is just one of the intro stories, that’s completely done, and the other ones we’ve just been sort of piece-mealing, shooting, bits and places as actors become available, so all three stories still have a little bit of footage still to be shot.”
On Joseph Gordon-Levitt‘s role as Johnny:
“He plays a gambler, a very cocky gambler, who comes in and tries to beat, y’know, the biggest villain in Sin City at his own game. It’s called, the story’s called “The Long Bad Night.” He beats the wrong guy in the game. Bad stuff happens to him. Bad Stuff…You gotta start with somebody really likeable like that, so you’re like ‘Oh, no, not him, not him, we like him.'”
On shooting with Juno Temple, Ray Liotta, and Jeremy Piven:
“She just shot, she was fantastic. Her and Ray Liotta shot together. They were amazing. Jeremy Piven was just last night. Oh, that was great. I was shooting last night on that story.”
On who Temple, Liotta, and Piven are playing:
“No, there’s some characters from the book. It will probably surprise people who they play and the turns that they do. It’s just a blast.”
On the return of Bruce Willis:
“Bruce is back, so you’ll be seeing him.”
On the use of 3D for the sequel:
“We shot this in 3D. We didn’t shoot SIN CITY in 3D. I wouldn’t want to convert that one probably, because the difference in shooting it is just…you can’t even compare it. We’re sitting there on the set and we’re looking at…and we know we couldn’t convert it to look like this. We’re really playing with stuff. Because that’s a very two-dimensional world already, it’s very stylized and to see that stylization in 3D [will] blow people’s minds. 3D hasn’t been used like this yet.”
On the casting of Ava, the titular “Dame” of the story:
“We have some choices in mind, but we haven’t finalized the casting. She doesn’t shoot for a couple weeks.”
Some good juicy bits from the man himself, no? I’m always amazed at how fast Rodriguez shoots and equally amazed that Piven, Temple, and Liotta have already shot scenes for the film, when their casting was announced just last week. I’d say that makes me nervous, in terms of prep time, but if the last SIN CITY is any indication and with co-director Frank Miller onboard to help steer the ship, I’m confident the sequel will deliver in spades.
