After sweeping the 92nd Academy Awards with Parasite two years ago, Bong Joon-ho is finally setting up his next movie. Deadline has reported that Bong Joon-ho is in talks to write and direct an untitled sci-fi film with Robert Pattinson also in talks to star.
The untitled film will be based on Edward Ashton’s upcoming novel Micky7 and it sounds just up Bong Joon-ho’s alley. The novel’s story follows Mickey7, who is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. “Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous—even suicidal—the crew turns to Mickey,” reads Deadline’s description. “After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal…and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.” There’s no guarantee that Bong Joon-ho will develop a straight adaptation of the novel, in fact, it could be quite different at the end of the day, but the basic premise has the potential for something dark and humorous.
Deadline says that Bong Joon-ho hs been loosely attached to the project since late last year and has been meeting with just about every A-lister for the role, but it was Robert Pattinson who wound up blowing them away. This won’t be Bong’s first project with WarnerMedia as he’s also developing a limited-series based on Parasite alongside Adam McKay. The director has previously said that the TV series will be able to include all of the ideas he couldn’t fit into the movie.
With Parasite, while I was writing the script I had so many more ideas I couldn’t convey into the two-hour running time of the film. I knew that if I had a longer running time, I would be able to tell these stories… Though I’m not very familiar with the TV industry, I really consider this limited series an expanded film that can delve deeper into the stories that didn’t make it into Parasite.
Robert Pattinson will next be seen starring in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. The highly anticipated film is set to hit theaters on March 4, 2022.
