Today marks the tenth anniversary of SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD, and although it was something of a box-office bomb back in the day, the Edgar Wright flick has gained quite a lot of fans over the years. It certainly helps that SCOTT PILGRIM is packed with great visual gags and more up-and-coming stars than you can shake a Sex Bob-Omb at.
During an interview with Vanity Fair, SCOTT PILGRIM director Edgar Wright and casting director Jennifer Euston revealed that a lot of big names auditioned for the film, including Sebastian Stan, Betty Gilpin, Rooney Mara, and more. One of those up-and-coming actors was Robert Pattinson, who read for the part of Hollywood superstar Lucas Lee, the role that wound up going to Chris Evans. According to Wright, Pattinson's audition was a little intense.
I remember it vividly. He did a much more intense read of it as well. Obviously, Robert is an incredible actor and someone who I’d love to work with now. But it was a very different take from what Chris did.
At the time of his audition, Robert Pattinson had already shot TWILIGHT but the film hadn't hit theaters yet. Jennifer Euston recalls asking Pattinson about TWILIGHT and it seems that the actor was already over what would become his biggest hit. "I remember we were asking him about Twilight, and he was like, ‘Yeah, I don’t know. I just saw it. It’s okay, I guess. I don’t know,'" Euston said. Although Pattinson didn't win the Lucas Lee role, I think it's safe to say that he's done alright since then. The actor will next be seen starring alongside John David Washington in Christopher Nolan's TENET, which is slated to hit U.S. theaters on September 3, 2020. Pattinson will also be seen in THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME, which will debut on Netflix on September 16, 2020, and is starring as Bruce Wayne/Batman in Matt Reeves' THE BATMAN.
