We've been hearing rumors about a possible new A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET movie for years now (almost 10 f*cking years to be exact) and today is no different. Well, kinda. Today we have word that original Freddy Kruger actor Robert Englund thinks if someone is going to take over for him as the Dream Demon Supreme, then it might as well be the long-rumor Kevin Bacon.
Englund told the crowd during his Monster Mania panel:
The rumor I’ve heard that I like is Kevin Bacon. Kevin loves horror. He’s a real actor. He’s a character actor. Kevin was great in Tremors. Kevin was great in Stir of Echoes. And I’ve heard this rumor. We need someone like that to take it on. And re-do it, exploiting all of the new technology.
He continues on to say:
We need a Freddy that can do the next eight movies – or seven, I don’t want them to remake Part 1 again. I’m not Freddy anymore, you guys. I could do one more…probably. If you shot me up with vitamin c. But here’s the thing. I can’t do eight more, you guys. So we need a new actor that you guys believe in and trust and love that can go the distance.
I don't know about you, but I'd LOVE to see Kevin Bacon take on the role. Especially if the rumor is true that HIGH TENSION and THE HILLS HAVE EYES director Alexandre Aja is in the running to reboot Wes Craven's classic for the big screen!
The last time we saw Freddy and pals on the big screen was in Samuel Bayer's 2010 remake starring Jackie Earle Haley as Fred "Freddy" Krueger and Rooney Mara as Nancy Holbrook. That remake sported this rundown:
Teenagers Nancy, Quentin, Kris, Jesse and Dean are all neighborhood friends who begin having the same dream of a horribly disfigured man who wears a tattered sweater and a glove made of knives. The man, Freddy Krueger (Jackie Earle Haley), terrorizes them in their dreams, and the only escape is to wake up. But when one of their number dies violently, the friends realize that what happens in the dream world is real, and the only way to stay alive is to stay awake.
Bayer directed A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (2010) from a screenplay by Wesley Strick and Eric Heisserer based on characters created by Wes Craven. Michael Bay produced the remake with Andrew Form and Brad Fuller. Jackie Earle Haley and Rooney Mara's co-stars included Kyle Gallner, Katie Cassidy, Thomas Dekker, and Kellan Lutz. New Line Cinema unleashed the updated nightmare into theaters way back on April 30, 2010.
