Monsterpalooza just took place over this past weekend so we have a seemingly endless stream of cool horror-related news pouring in. That said, this particular story, courtesy of Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund, is the one that has grabbed my attention the most.
Over the course of the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET series, Freddy killed more than a handful of Elm Street teens. Supposedly the total number of Krueger kills is 43. But that seems kinda low to me so I just might have to do some in-depth research myself.
Anyway, Englund was recently interviewed at Monsterpalooza and someone (thank God) asked him what his favorite kill from all of the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET films was. And are you ready for this? It is NOT what you expect.
Turns out Robert Englund’s favorite Krueger kill was from FREDDY’S DEAD: THE FINAL NIGHTMARE.
Remember that kid with the hearing-aid? Yep. That’s the kill. After letting the crowd, and now us in on that interesting bit of trivia, he then went on to tell the room why exactly the kill ranks above all others in his eyes.
Robert Englund on the hearing-aid kill:
That’s such a Cronenberg head explosion, you know? The guys loved doing that. But yeah that’s what I love, it’s a very politically incorrect sequence. And I know many, and I don’t even know what the politically correct term is anymore – I don’t think it’s disabled anymore – special needs actors? I work with actors that are in wheelchairs or have problems with their sight and they don’t want to just play goodie-goodie people all the time. They don’t just have to be the good guy, or the nice guy, or the saint, or the martyr. They want to be bad guys and villains as well. And I love the political incorrectness of that. Freddy is an equal opportunity serial killer. He doesn’t care if you’ve got a hearing-aid, he’ll get you.
Englund’s reasonings behind the kill are interesting for sure, and I like the line about Freddy being “an equal opportunity serial killer”, but I can’t fully say I agree with the man here. Nothing wrong with the choice, but I think the ventriloquist puppet with the veins as strings kill from A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3: DREAM WARRIORS is f*cking amazing.
But to each his own
Do you agree with Robert Englund on his choice of favorite Freddy kill? Let us know what YOUR favorite kill of the series is. Whether in the comments below, on Twitter, or on Facebook. I’d really like to know the “general” consensus on this one.
You can watch Robert Englund’s FULL INTERVIEW below. The part with the hearing-aid kill starts at 19:43 if you’re interested.
