Robert Eggers has been trying to get his reimagining of Nosferatu off the ground for years, but at long last, it seems to be moving foward. It was announced a little over a week ago that Bill Skarsgård had signed on to star in Nosferatu with Lily-Rose Depp in talks to join him. Deadline has now reported that Nicholas Hoult is also in talks to join Nosferatu.
The new reimagining of Nosferatu will be a “gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman (Depp) in 19th century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire (Skarsgard) who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him.” It’s not known who Nicolas Hoult would be playing in Nosferatu. Robert Eggers is set to direct the project as well as write the script.
The last time Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu movie came this close was several years ago when Anya Taylor-Joy and Harry Styles were expected to star. Eggers hit pause on the project when Styles had to drop out and Taylor-Joy could no longer hit the film into her schedule. Nosferatu has hit so many walls over the years that Eggers almost believed that F.W. Murnau (who directed the original movie) was giving him a sign from beyond the grave. “It’s fallen apart twice. I’ve been trying to get the word out because the word did carry that Harry Styles was going to be in the movie,” Eggers said. “I’ve been trying so hard. And I just wonder if Murnau’s ghost is telling me, like, you should stop.“
Should Nicholas Hoult join the cast of Nosferatu, it won’t be the only vampire movie on his slate. The actor is set to star in Renfield, a horror-comedy which follows Count Dracula’s famous henchman as he finds a new lease on life in modern day New Orleans when he falls in love with a feisty but perennially aggressive traffic cop. Hoult stars as Renfield with Nicholas Cage as Count Dracula, and the film will hit theaters on April 14, 2023.
