Robert De Niro’s THE GOOD SHEPHERD is one of the most underrated movies of the past decade. It received mixed reviews from critics but seems to have been mostly overlooked by the general public. If you take the time to watch it, you will find it is a sprawling story that was just getting started. De Niro had previously mentioned filming sequels to bring the story current.
De Niro and producers have opted to craft the sequel to THE GOOD SHEPHERD instead as a Showtime series. Showtime is already home to the spy series HOMELAND and THE GOOD SHEPHERD would be a nice compliment. It is unknown whether the series will reboot the film or pick up where it left off. All that we do know is that Eric Roth, who wrote the film, will produce and write the series and De Niro himself will direct the pilot. De Niro will produce via his Tribeca banner and this would be their first foray into television.
THE GOOD SHEPHERD focused primarily on the origin and creation of the CIA and starred Matt Damon, De Niro, Angelina Jolie, Alec Baldwin, and Billy Crudup. I would assume the series would either stay in the 1960s or possibly jump a little further into the 1970s. Period series seem to be hot these days and having one on pay cable would guarantee nothing would be held back.
No word on when THE GOOD SHEPHERD would premiere on Showtime. But, you can be sure they will market the hell out of it when it does.
What do you think of the potential for these series?
