As I'm sure we all know, before THREE FROM HELL Rob Zombie directed a remake of John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN and followed it up with a sequel called HALLOWEEN II starring Scout Taylor Compton and Malcolm McDowell. Did you know that? Of course, you did. Well, today Zombie admits that making the two films with the Weinsteins and Dimension was "a miserable experience."
Zombie reveals:
Making Halloween with the Weinstein’s was a miserable experience for me, and so I was very reticent to do the second one. I did do the second one, and I thought, ‘Okay, well the first one was a miserable experience, but it did well, so maybe it’ll be easier the second time?’ It was worse. Oh my God. I felt like they weren’t trusting me on the first one because they wanted to make sure it was a hit and now they weren’t trusting me not to fuck up their hit.
He adds:
They would show me scenes from Halloween to try and make a point and I’d be like, ‘Yeah, I know. I made that movie. Why do you show me that like I’ve never seen it before?’
And finally he reveals:
We made a behind the scenes documentary for the making of Halloween. That has somehow gotten lost in the vaults. That shows how messed up everything was and what was going on when we were making those movies.
Now I don't know about you but I love HALLOWEEN II. That first Rob Zombie HALLOWEEN, I dig here and there, but I thought HALLOWEEN II was a pure Rob Zombie film. For better or worse. Too bad the Weinsteins made it such a hellish experience for Zombie behind the scenes.
For those who might not know, Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN began:
Nearly two decades after being committed to a mental institution for killing his stepfather and older sister, Michael Myers (Tyler Mane) breaks out, intent on returning to the town of Haddonfield, Ill. He arrives in his hometown on Halloween with the indomitable purpose of hunting down his younger sister, Laurie (Scout Taylor-Compton). The only thing standing between Michael and a Halloween night of bloody carnage is psychologist Dr. Samuel Loomis (Malcolm McDowell).
Rob Zombie wrote and directed HALLOWEEN (2007) based on the original classic written by John Carpenter and Debra Hill. Zombie also produced along with Malek Akkad and Andy Gould. It starred Malcolm McDowell, Sheri Moon Zombie, Tyler Mane, Scout Taylor-Compton, Brad Dourif, Danielle Harris, and William Forsythe. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and The Weinstein Company unleashed the film into theaters back on August 31, 2007.
