On Wednesday we were discussing the 1977 horror classic SUSPIRIA here on Arrow in the Head, and in a sad coincidence the film's co-writer Daria Nicolodi passed away soon after. Nicolodi's daughter Asia Argento announced the passing of her mother on Instagram, saying
Rest in peace beloved mother. Now you can fly free with your great spirit and you won't have to suffer anymore. I will try to go on for your beloved grandchildren and especially for you who would never want to see me so grieved. Even if without you I miss the ground under my feet, and I feel I have lost my only true point of reference. I am close to all those who have known and loved her. I will always be your Aria.
Nicolodi earned genre icon status through her collaborations with legendary filmmaker Dario Argento, Asia's father. Nicolodi and Argento were in a personal relationship from 1974 through 1985, and Nicolodi had acting roles in Argento's films DEEP RED, INFERNO, TENEBRAE, PHENOMENA, OPERA, and MOTHER OF TEARS – most of which are considered to be among the best horror films ever made, as is SUSPIRIA.
In addition to conceiving the initial idea for SUSPIRIA and writing the screenplay with Argento, she was supposed to have an acting role in that film. Unfortunately, an injury prevented her from doing so.
Nicolodi's other genre work included roles in Mario Bava's SHOCK, Lamberto Bava's DELIRIUM, Michele Soavi's THE SECT, and Luigi Cozzi's PAGANINI HORROR (which she also co-wrote).
Born in Florence, Italy on June 19, 1950, Nicolodi passed away in Rome on November 26 at the age of 70. Our sincere condolences go out to her family, friends, and fans.
