Charlton Heston, one of the few stalwarts of Hollywood’s Golden Age left, passed away yesterday at the age of 84. Heston is easily best known for his role as BEN-HUR, as well as playing Moses in THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, and for starring in THE PLANET OF THE APES. He announced in 2002 that he was battling Alzheimer’s disease, and since then has avoided making public appearances. Unfortunately, my final memory of Heston has been tainted by Michael Moore and his incredibly awkward interview of the legend in the doc BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE (Heston was the controversial president of the National Rifle Association), but let’s not forget the fact that Heston was easily one of the most popular and influential actors ever, and even though he was no longer making films, he will be missed.
RIP Charlton Heston
