Acclaimed filmmaker Ridley Scott (BLADE RUNNER, LEGEND, ALIEN) is preparing to make his television directorial debut with a serialized sci-fi series titled RAISED BY WOLVES. Serving as the writer and showrunner of Scott's new project, which was recently given a straight to series order by TNT, is PRISONERS and PAPILLON scribe Aaron Guzikowski. The series is being produced by Scott's Scott Free Productions in association with Turner's Studio T and Madhouse Entertainment, with Scott, Guzikowski, David W. Zucker (THE GOOD WIFE, THE HOT ZONE) and Jordan Sheehan (BRAINDEAD, THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE), and Madhouse Entertainment’s Adam Kolbrenner (PRISONERS) and Robyn Meisinger (PRISONERS) serving as executive producers.
For what is planned to be a surreal sci-fi drama, RAISED BY WOLVES centers upon two androids tasked with raising human children on a mysterious virgin planet. As the burgeoning colony of humans threatens to be torn apart by religious differences the androids learn that controlling the beliefs of humans is a treacherous and difficult task.
In talking about the new project, Scott said in a statement that he's “always searching for new frontiers in the sci-fi genre and have found a true original in RAISED BY WOLVES – a wholly distinct and imaginative world, full of characters struggling with existential questions: What makes us human? What constitutes a family? And what if we could start over again and erase the mess we’ve made of our planet? Would we survive? Would we do better?” Scott questioned. “Given TNT’s impressive run of bold, quality programming, this feels like exactly the right home for this kind of ambitious television.”
Eager to share her thoughts about the upcoming series, Sarah Aubrey, executive vice president of original programming for TNT said, “Ridley Scott is simply the best there is in the sci-fi genre." She then continued, "Besides directing some of the most important sci-fi films of all-time, Ridley has created iconic characters from ALIENS' Ripley to PROMETHEUS' Elizabeth Shaw. We’re thrilled to have Ridley do the same for us as we look forward to his vision of Aaron’s complex and futuristic Mother. It’s incredibly rare to be able to make television that both challenges one’s intellect and also thrills the excited fangirl side—Raised by Wolves is that rare show that does both.”
Also looking to add his voice to the chorus of accolades related to the project was Guzikowski himself who stated, "Ridley Scott’s movies have always been a part of my life and a huge inspiration in my work.” The CONTRABAND and THE RED ROAD writer then added, “So getting the opportunity to work with him and TNT on a story that is so near and dear to my heart is truly a dream come true."
If thought-provoking stories centering around A.I. and their relationships is your jam, might I recommend an Image comic book series by the name of Alex + Ada. Written by Jonathan Luna and Sarah Vaughn, with art by Jonathan Luna, Alex + Ada is a sci-fi drama set in the near future. The last thing in the world Alex wanted was an X5, the latest in realistic androids, but after Ada is dropped into his life, he discovers she is more than just a robot and takes a huge risk to unlock Ada so she can think for herself and explore life as a sentient android. Can they survive the consequences? Dun dun dunnnn! It's a thumping good read, and I would not be surprised if we hear that it's being picked up for a film or television adaptation sometime soon.
