Ridley Scott talks Prometheus deleted scenes as yet another viral video hits the web

Just because PROMETHEUS has been out for a couple of days doesn’t mean there is nothing to report on Ridley Scott’s sci-fi epic. Quite the contrary – two very interesting tidbits of info have emerged and it would be a shame not to share them with you. First off, Mr. Scott recently revealed to Collider that – even though he considers the theatrical version his director’s cut – the Blu-ray release will include plenty of previously unseen footage to appease the hardcore fans. Even cooler, he gave a description of one of the deleted scenes. You can read the excerpts below for details. It’s not majorly spoilerific, but of course, if you haven’t yet had the chance to see PROMETHEUS, you might want to hold off until you do. Here’s what the director said…

…on the deleted scenes included on the disc:

“This is fundamentally the director’s cut. But there will be half an hour of stuff on the menu because people are so into films—how they’re made, how they’re set up, and the rejections in it. That’s why it’s fascinating. So this will all go on to the menu.”

…on one of  the deleted scenes in question:

“The Engineer fight scene was pretty good. It will definitely go on the menu. It won’t go on the long version. The problem about it is, while she [Rapace] gives as good as she gets with an axe (she’s very physical), he’s so big, for him to be clouted with a conventional weapon somehow diminished him. It’s subtle. It’s drama. I didn’t want to diminish him by having this person who has a weapon to be able to back him off. It minimized him. That’s why when he deals with people inside his cockpit, it’s over. Wham, wham, wham. Even the shot doesn’t mean anything. And so all she has time for is introducing him to the big boy inside the lab.”

On how much longer the extended cut on the Blu-ray/DVD will be:

“Twenty minutes.”

There you have it. Just when you thought the anticipation was over, there’s another reason to wait for PROMETHEUS – this time, the extended home release.

In other news, if you thought all that awesome viral marketing would just go away with the movie hitting theaters, then you were luckily mistaken. It turns out clues in the end credits (in particular, the tagline “building better worlds since 10.11.12”) have lead to the reveal of a new viral website: whatis101112.com. The site contains some new viral goodness, most interesting of which is a previously unseen clip of Guy Pearce as Peter Weyland quoting Friedrich Nietzsche. The quote “I am a law only for my kind, I am no law for all” comes from Nietzche’s “Thus Spoke Zarathustra”. Another quote from the famed book can be spotted elsewhere on the site, stating “What is great in man is that he is a bridge and not an end”. The book itself is a philosophical novel concerning such ideas as “the death of God” and “the coming of the Übermensch”. How do these ominous passages fit in with the grand scheme of the PROMETHEUS universe (and perhaps more importantly – what do they say of the things to come)? I’ll let you decide.
