Few movies can stay in the limelight after their release, but I guess it’s no wonder PROMETHEUS is one of them. The movie has been out for days, but it still manages to steal headlines – it’s just that news regarding some new poster or piece of viral marketing have now given way to debates concerning the movie’s plot and its potential continuation. Ridley Scott himself certainly doesn’t shy away from presenting his own take on the ideas expressed in the film.
Speaking of which, here’s a statement from the director, courtesy of WorstPreviews, that might put everything you saw and think you know in a different light (and yes, it contains spoilers for the movie, obviously):
“If you look at it as an ‘our children are misbehaving down there’ scenario, there are moments where it looks like we’ve gone out of control, running around with armor and skirts, which of course would be the Roman Empire. And they were given a long run. A thousand years before their disintegration actually started to happen. And you can say, ‘Let’s send down one more of our emissaries to see if he can stop it.’ Guess what? They crucified him.”
Oh! That certainly puts a spin on the story. While there’s been no question that the movie explored some very profound ideas concerning the creation of humanity, so far it was regarded in rather irreligious terms, i.e. more Erich von Däniken than Space Jesus. Of course, everyone is entitled to their own interpretation, but it’s hard to disregard one coming straight from the movie’s creator.
