Ridley Scott plans to top Alien’s chestburster scene in Alien: Covenant

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

It's been over thirty-five years since the release of Ridley Scott's ALIEN and the film is still just as effective and disturbing as it was that very first time, particularly the iconic chestburster scene which sees the birth of one of the most famous movie monsters in cinema. It's truly a classic scene and one that would be hard for anyone to top, but Ridley Scott plans on doing just that in the upcoming ALIEN: COVENANT. The director spoke backstage at the Golden Globes and revealed that he plans on bringing us something "much worse" than that scene in ALIEN: COVENANT.

I always remember walking down the edge in Saint Louis when we were previewing [Alien], I couldn’t sit through the film one more time. I walked down the edge into the kitchen scene when John Hurt started to bring up his breakfast. That moment, I realized how pretty scary the film was… I felt a sense of responsibility that I had gone too far because it was extreme. I’m going to try and do that again this year, but much worse.

I can't imagine what he has in mind that could possibly be as effective as that original scene, but I'm already anxious to find out. Ridley Scott also commented on the rating that he's shooting for with ALIEN: COVENANT, and while the answer doesn't come as any surprise, Scott said that he's going for "a pretty hard R." Works for me.

A synopsis for ALIEN: COVENANT:

Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the "synthetic" David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

ALIEN: COVENANT will hit theaters on October 6, 2017.
