Ridley Scott may direct Blade Runner sequel after all

Just last week we brought you the intriguing news that BLADE RUNNER director Ridley Scott wouldn't be directing the upcoming sequel, with Variety reporting that BLADE RUNNER 2 is set to get underway in 2015, "but with someone else directing." Well, pump the brakes, kid, because that might not be the case at all.

Now the British filmmaker tells Yahoo that he's reluctant to reliquish control of the sequel, stating…

"I don’t know about that. The script is very, very good. Very good. I wouldn’t know [what sort of director we’d want]. It’s a hard one to track because it’s a very personal piece of my work."

"[The original] may be one of the most personal pieces I did. I got so beaten up for it, I said I’d never try that again. But here we are. It’s sitting there ready to be made…"

I feel that if a sequel has to be made, Scott should be the one to direct rather than passing the reins to someone else. I'm hoping that he'll be the one in the director's chair, but we'll have to wait and see how this all plays out.

Original star Harrison Ford will reportedly return in the sequel to the 1982 cult sci-fi hit, but as previously reported he will only appear in the third act.

It’s thought scheduling conflicts would prevent Scott from directing BLADE RUNNER 2, which is due to begin filming in 2015, as he’s already begun production on THE MARTIAN which is out November next year. If Scott decides to tackle BLADE RUNNER 2 himself that would probably force the production to be pushed back to give the director more time to finish work on THE MARTIAN and prep for the sequel. If he does hand the directing duties over, Scott will still be involved in the film on the producing side.

All of this makes me wonder how work on BLADE RUNNER 2 will affect Scott's PROMETHEUS 2. Guess we'll just have to wait for some kind of confirmation.
