Ricky Gervais to return to Netflix with new dark comedy series After Life

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Ricky Gervais has given me some of my absolute favourite moments of comedy in The Office, Extras, and The Ricky Gervais Show on XFM, but his more recent series' haven't quite done it for me. That said, I'm always excited to see what Gervais has cooked up, and his next series sounds as though it might be right up my alley.

Netflix has given a six-episode order to After Life, a half-hour dark comedy series which Ricky Gervais will executive produce, direct, and star in. The series will revolve around Tony (Gervais), a man who had a perfect life, "but after his wife Lisa suddenly dies, Tony changes. After contemplating taking his own life, he decides instead to live long enough to punish the world by saying and doing whatever he likes from now on. He thinks it’s like a Superpower — not caring about himself or anyone else — but it turns out to be tricky when everyone is trying to save the nice guy they used to know." Charlie Hanson, who collaborated with Ricky Gervais on Derek, Life's Too Short, Extras, and DAVID BRENT: LIFE ON THE ROAD, will also executive produce the series.

As pre-production on After Life has only just begun, there's no telling when we might see the series, but it likely won't be until much later this year or even 2019.
