The Walking Dead ended its 11 season run this past Sunday, but there are multiple spin-offs on the way. (In addition to the continuations of Fear the Walking Dead and Tales of the Walking Dead.) The characters of Maggie and Negan, played by Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, will be back in a show called The Walking Dead: Dead City, which sees them traveling to Manhattan. Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) is the lead in a spin-off that’s appropriately titled The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon and will take place in France. And Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) are getting their own spin-off mini-series. Now the teaser for their show has been unveiled, revealing that this spin-off also has an appropriate title. It’s called Rick & Michonne, and you can see the teaser in the embed above.
Gurira co-created the Rick & Michonne mini-series and is working on the show as a writer. Consisting of six episodes, the show will present an “epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world. Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead… And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive — or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead?“
Gurira is working on the Rick & Michonne mini-series with Scott M. Gimple, Chief Content Officer of the Walking Dead Universe. Self spoke with Gimple about their collaboration, and he told them, “She challenges me, I challenge her, and neither one of us lets the other off the hook. In life, I’m more a character actor; Danai is a lead. When we’re working, when we’re pitching, when we’re just dealing with life stuff—it’s a good combo.” Describing Gurira as “incredibly creatively ambitious,” Gimple added, “[Danai] wants to do new, signature work—stuff that isn’t out there currently. She doesn’t want to settle in any way. It’s the best creative energy to be around.”
Rick & Michonne begins filming in January, and the teaser lets us know that will be airing on AMC by the end of 2023. Are you looking forward to this mini-series? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
