While we sit and wait for Richard Linklater‘s spiritual sequel to DAZED AND CONFUSED to hit next spring (currently titled EVERYBODY WANTS SOME), the man is moving forward with an adaptation of the book, “Where’d You Go, Bernadette?” The story follows an agoraphobic architect and mother named Bernadette, who goes missing prior to a family trip to Antarctica. Linklater has just nabbed his Bernadette in the form of the lovely Cate Blanchett.
The in-depth synopsis:
Bernadette, her husband Elgin and their daughter Bee live in Seattle. Bernadette grants her daughter’s wish, a family trip to Antarctica, and gets enveloped in the plans. She does this as a coping mechanism because for years she has lived in a city she hates with a life she never wanted, and is just barely holding onto her sanity. After everything goes wrong, Bernadette suddenly disappears, leaving Bee to search through old documents and emails to try and find her mother. While doing this, she discovers her mother’s troubled past.
If an audience is going to follow around a woman with some mental health issues, you can do A LOT worse than Blanchett. She’s one of those actresses who’s always a joy to watch on the big screen and coupled with Linklater’s directorial stylings, this may prove to be one of the more entertaining book adaptations to come our way. Although to be fair, I’ll gladly welcome any Linklater offering. They don’t all hit, but when they do, they hit hard!
Linklater’s next film, EVERYBODY WANTS SOME, is currently scheduled for an April 15, 2016 release.
If we could cast Ethan Hawke in every Linklater film from now on, that’d be grrrreeeeaaaat.
