Richard Kelly’s Southland Tales to get an extended cut and two-disk Blu-ray!

So this is awesome! I've said on this site before about how much I love director Richard Kelly's crazy-ass political satire SOUTHLAND TALES, his audacious (and controversial) follow-up to his generation-defining psychological sci-fi horror film DONNIE DARKO!

Now, we're finally getting a Blu-ray set that will contain not only a remastered version of the original film, but also the infamous Cannes cut that involved around thirty minutes of extra footage, including an entire subplot starring Janeane Garofalo involving the military and DUNGEONS & DRAGONS that was cut in the theatrical version (she's seen very briefly at the very end).

Here's the official synopsis:

With the United States under the threat of nuclear attack, the lives of several people converge in a dystopian Los Angeles. Movie star Boxer Santaros (Dwayne Johnson) plans his next film with the help of ambitious porn actress Krysta Now (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and troubled policeman Roland Taverner (Seann William Scott). Meanwhile, Marxist revolutionaries, greedy corporations and secretive government agencies pursue their separate agendas among a paranoid populace.

And here are the special features of the upcoming extended Blu-ray:

  • Theatrical cut (145 minutes)
  • Cannes cut (160 minutes)
  • Audio commentary by writer-director Richard Kelly (theatrical cut)
  • It’s a Madcap World: The Making of an Unfinished Film – Documentary with writer-director Richard Kelly and crew members (new)
  • USIDent TV: Surveilling the Southland – Making-of featurette with cast & crew
  • This is the Way the World Ends animated short
  • Theatrical trailer
  • Image gallery
  • Booklet with new writing by Peter Tonguette and Simon Ward (first pressing only)

Meanwhile, SOUTHLAND TALES: EXTENDED CUT – starring Seann William Scott, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Nora Dunn, Christopher Lambert, John Larroquette, Bai Ling, Jon Lovitz, Mandy Moore, and Justin Timberlake. – will be available from Arrow January 26th!
