I think it's safe to say that Steven Spielberg's JAWS is a film you love as much as I do. Hell, I consider it a f*cking masterpiece, and I'm sure you're opinion isn't far off from mine. But it looks like original JAWS co-star Richard Dreyfuss thinks there's a way to make the film even better. Brace yourselves. Dreyfuss evidently feels that pulling a George Lucas and adding a CGI shark to the original film would be… wait for it… a good idea. Yep. He even goes on to say "it would be huge and it would open up the film to younger people."
Specifically, Richard Dreyfuss told Deadline:
I think they should do it, it would be huge and it would open up the film to younger people. Is that blasphemy? No, no, I don’t think so. The technology now could make the shark look as good as the rest of the movie.
There are people who say Jaws is a perfect film otherwise and it is amazing what Steven accomplished with the challenges he had. They should put the money into CGI [to replace] that beast and make it come alive.
Again, I don't think anyone needs to look any further than George Lucas' Special Edition STAR WARS upgrades to know that this is a super bad idea. Leave JAWS alone, I say! But no worries, ladies, and gentleman, I bet if this idea was brought up to Speilberg he'd laugh Dreyfuss out of the office. "Let's colorize SCHINDLER'S LIST, Stevie!" Spielberg kicks his ass back to AMERICAN GRAFITTI.
The original masterpiece began when
When a young woman is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) wants to close the beaches, but mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town. Ichthyologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled ship captain Quint (Robert Shaw) offer to help Brody capture the killer beast, and the trio engage in an epic battle of man vs. nature.
