Rian Johnson spills details on deleted scenes from Star Wars: The Last Jedi

In case you haven't seen STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI yet, be mindful of SPOILERS!

The recently released STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI stands as the longest film in the STAR WARS franchise, but that doesn't mean that there weren't quite a few sequences left on the cutting room floor. Collider had the chance to speak with THE LAST JEDI writer/director Rian Johnson, as well as editor Bob Ducsay, during a press-day for the film, and Johnson revealed that there are about twenty minutes of deleted scenes which we'll be getting on the STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI Blu-ray.

These sequences wont be included in any sort of director's cut as Rian Johnson said that what's currently playing in the theaters is the best version of the film. It seems that there was once much more of Finn (John Boyega) in THE LAST JEDI, as Johnson described several scenes featuring the former stormtrooper turned Resistance fighter. First up, a sequence in which Finn, Rose (Kelly Marie Tran), and DJ (Benicio del Toro) sneak aboard Snoke's (Andy Serkis) ship.

There’s a whole extended sequence where Finn and Rose and DJ sneak through the Mega Destroyer when they’re kind of, after they sneak in with DJ and they’re trying to find the tracker. There’s a whole extended sequence. It’s a full sequence of like stuff with them sneaking through this big office area of the Mega Destroyer and then having to fake out these Stormtroopers.

Editor Bob Ducsay added that the sequence was taken out of the film near the beginning of editing once it became clear that "that section of the movie was completely lopsided in favor of those three, and it just didn’t support it." Also swept to the Finn side of the cutting room was a "great" scene between Finn and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) where Poe brings Finn up to speed after his coma. Perhaps most exciting to fans, at least, it is to me, is the tease of a "major" sequence with Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) on Ahch-To.

And then on the island there’s a massive sequence that we shot with Daisy and Mark, which is kind of an additional sort of trial/test that she goes through, that involves her and Mark, and then a big emotional scene between the two of them. I mean, it’s big stuff, it’s like actual real scenes.

As someone who was left wanting more out of those training scenes between Rey and Luke, I'm looking forward to seeing just how big and emotional this sequence will be.
