Last year, Netflix purchased the rights to make two Knives Out sequels to the tune of more than $460 million. With the first one, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, out next month–and getting incredible reviews–fans may already be wondering what’s in store for the next (Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da: A Knives Out Mystery?). But Rian Johnson may not necessarily stop there.
On a recent episode of Variety’s “Awards Circuit Podcast”, writer/director Rian Johnson discussed the possibility of taking Knives Out past trilogy territory. “If each one of these can really be what Agatha Christie did, if it can be not just in a totally new location and a new cast, but also trying something exciting, I’ll keep doing it as long as Daniel [Craig] and I are having a good time. I’ll keep making these as long as they let me.”
And if Craig bows out as Benoit Blanc, then why not continue anyway, setting in motion the Knives Out Extended Universe?
Rian Johnson also took time to chat about the progress of his next Star Wars movie. As he stated last month, it does partly come down to scheduling. He is also, of course, focused on Knives Out. “I had such an amazing experience making The Last Jedi,” he said. “It’s entirely a matter of scheduling. For me, putting this [Glass Onion] out and making the next one of these…the answer is I don’t know.”
Still, Rian Johnson is eager to continue to have a role in the Star Wars universe. When asked if fans would get a Star Wars trilogy from Johnson, he said, “God I hope so.”
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery hits theaters on November 23rd before coming to Netflix exactly one month later.
