Filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch, Day Watch, Wanted, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) is the biggest proponent of the relatively new "Screen Life" style of movies, where the entire story plays out on the screens of characters' computers. He has produced the Screen Life movies Unfriended, Unfriended: Dark Web, Hack the Bloggers, Searching, and Profile (which he also directed). His latest Screen Life production is the sci-fi thriller Resurrected, which is currently filming in Los Angeles.
Directed by Egor Baranov (The Blackout, the Gogol series), Resurrected is set "in a dystopian future, where the Vatican has discovered how to resurrect people". Dave Davis of The Vigil stars in the film as
Stanley, an ordinary man who became priest following a personal tragedy and discovers a series of random murders committed by resurrected people. Stanley starts to investigate the crimes and unveils a conspiracy built around the resurrection process that soon threatens his life and the life of his young son, Nicholas.
Bekmanbetov is producing Resurrected with Maria Zatulovskaya under the Bazelevs banner, along with Logical Pictures' David Meadeb and in association with Aleksandr Fomin of Pulsar Content.
Pulsar founders Gilles Sousa and Marie Garrett said,
Screen Life movies from Bazelevs studio deliver a new narrative device and a novel way to experience cinema. These productions have shown their great theatrical appeal amongst audiences of all ages even though they’re made in a different format than traditional films."
Pulsar is handling the international sales for the film and have already secured distribution for it in multiple territories.
The plot synopsis makes Resurrected sound interesting, but it also sounds like a story I would like to see play out in a traditional way, not just on the screens of computers and other devices. But I'm always hesitant about Screen Life movies and then usually end up enjoying them, so we'll see how this one turns out.
