Resonant: The First Purge director Gerard McMurray to adapt the Vault Comics hit for a pulse-pounding series

Resonant, BET+, TV series, Gerard McMurray

The First Purge director Gerard McMurray is about to tackle another comic book adaptation when he brings Vault Comics’ Resonant to television. The project is part of an overall deal McMurray has signed with BET. The adaptation hails from CBS Studios and Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions, with McMurray serving as the project’s director, writer, and executive producer. Resonant will debut on the BET+ streaming service once it’s ready to roll out.

Written by David Andry, with art by Skylar Patridge, colors by Jason Wordie, letters by Deron Bennett, and design by Tim Daniel, Resonant is a post-apocalyptic thriller about a father struggling to provide for his family in times of violence, uncertainty, and emotional collapse.

Here’s the official synopsis for the first volume of Resonant, courtesy of Vault Comics:

A decade has passed since the first Waves hit, unleashing humanity’s darkest impulses and plunging the world into chaos. Paxton, a single father of three, must venture from the secluded haven they’ve built to restock the medicine his chronically-ill youngest son needs to survive. Paxton and his children—now separated—will battle everything in their path to reunite when the somewhat routine trip goes awry.

“My company, Buppie Productions, is committed to creating exciting and entertaining content that reflects the Black experience across all genres,” said McMurray. “BET is an iconic brand that has been at the forefront of creating spaces for Black creators like myself to showcase our talent. I’m proud to partner with BET Studios to bring my unique vision for storytelling to the television landscape. Resonant is the perfect first project for me to kick off my deal with BET. I’m also excited to be working with CBS Studios, Vault Comics and the amazing team at Scott Free Productions to bring the graphic novel to life as a TV series.”

“We’re so thrilled to have Gerard join our growing arsenal of collaborators for BET Studios,” stated Aisha Summers Burke, executive VP and general manager of BET Studios. “As BET aligns with the rapidly shifting media landscape, it is vital to work with a team of creators who are tapped into the intricacies and nuances of the Black experience, as well as those whose industry acumen is unmatched. We found this, and much more, in Gerard. We look forward to seeing our partnership flourish through this venture.”

McMurray is also developing an adaptation of Kwanza Osajyefo and Tim Smith 3’s Black from Black Mask Studios for Studio 8 and Warner Bros. McMurray will direct and write the adaptation that presents a world in which only Black people have superpowers.

I’ve not read Resonant, but I purchased it while writing this article. I’m always looking for new comics to read, and I immensely dig the concept and Skylar Patridge’s art. I’m excited to check it out and learn more about the series as pieces continue falling into place.
