Last summer, a TV series based on the Resident Evil video game franchise made its debut on the Netflix streaming service – and was quickly cancelled. That show was an entirely separate project from Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, the feature film that was released at the end of 2021… and it looks like Welcome to Raccoon City was the more successful of the two projects, because it might actually be getting a follow-up! That movie came to us from Raccoon HG Film Productions and was filmed in Greater Sudbury, a city in Ontario, Canada. Sudbury.com reports that a mysterious movie called Umbrella Chronicles, which is backed by Raccoon HG Film Productions, is receiving $2 million in funding from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation to film in the Greater Sudbury area. Since this movie is coming from the same production company as Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, is going to be filming in the same city, and has a Resident Evil-related title, we have to assume that this is a sequel to Welcome to Raccoon City.
Written and directed by Johannes Roberts and directly based on the first two Resident Evil video games, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City has the following synopsis: Once the booming home of pharmaceutical giant Umbrella Corporation, Raccoon City is now a dying Midwestern town. The company’s exodus left the city a wasteland… with great evil brewing below the surface. When that evil is unleashed, the townspeople are forever… changed… and a small group of survivors must work together to uncover the truth behind Umbrella and make it through the night.
The film stars Robbie Amell as Chris Redfield, Kaya Scodelario as Claire Redfield, Avan Jogia as Leon Kennedy, Tom Hopper as Albert Wesker, Hannah John-Kamen as Jill Valentine, Neal McDonough as William Birkin, Donal Logue as Chief Brian Irons, Chad Rook as Richard Aiken, Lily Gao as Ada Wong, Marina Mazepa as Lisa Trevor, and Nathan Dale as Brad Vickers.
Welcome to Raccoon City was a reboot of the Resident Evil movie franchise and was definitely meant to open the door to sequels. Now it’s looking like it did what it intended to do.
