Sony Pictures announced that production on the Resident Evil reboot wrapped up in December under the direction of Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down) and the studio have now announced that the film will be hitting theaters on September 3, 2021.

The Resident Evil reboot will bring things back to basics as it will take place in 1998 and serve as an origin story to the original games. "With this movie, I really wanted to go back to the original first two games and re-create the terrifying visceral experience I had when I first played them whilst at the same time telling a grounded human story about a small dying American town that feels both relatable and relevant to today’s audiences," said writer/director Johannes Roberts when the project was announced. The film stars Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner) as Claire Redfield, Robbie Amell (Upload) as Chris Redfield, and Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and The Wasp) as Jill Valentine.

It was nearly twenty years ago when Paul W.S. Anderson first brought Resident Evil to the big-screen when he transformed the video-game franchise into a series that wound up spanning six films which came to a close with Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. The films starred Milla Jovovich, and although she isn't involved in the reboot, she had previously said that she would jump at the chance to return. "Resident Evil is such a huge part of my life, on so many different levels," Jovovich explained. "I was such a big fan of the game. That's what made me want to be in the movie to begin with. So, I would always love to go back to the Resident Evil universe. I think it's such a fun place to be in, and it's such a great reality. And, listen, I spent half of my career in that world. I would love to be a part of it again. I know whoever is doing it is going to have an amazing time on it, because it's a really fun world to be a part of."
