Academy Award winning actress Renee Zellweger has signed on star in her first-ever TV series regular role for WHAT/IF, an anthology-style social thriller created by TV's REVENGE and SWINGTOWN creator Mike Kelley for Netflix. The upcoming project is set to explore the ripple effects of what happens when acceptable people start doing unacceptable things. Each season will tackle a different morality tale inspired by culturally consequential source material, and the power of a single fateful decision to change the trajectory of an entire life. For the show, Zellweger will star as Anne, a woman caught in the disastrous effects of time changing events that are considered anchoring points in our history. The show has been greenlit for a total of 10 episodes.
Mike Kelley will serve as the writer and showrunner of WHAT/IF, in addition to also acting as an executive producer alongside Melissa Loy (PAGE FRIGHT), Alex Gartner (THE GREAT WALL, WARCRAFT), Charles Roven (AMERICAN HUSTLE, WONDER WOMAN), Robert Zemeckis (BACK TO THE FUTURE, CONTACT), and Jack Rapke (MONSTER HOUSE, CAST AWAY).
When WHAT/IF arrives, it will mark Zellweger's most significant TV part since her debut role in USA Network's A TASTE FOR KILLING, in which the actress played a character named Mary Lou. Since that time, Zellweger has gone on to star in the BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY film series, as well as movies like CHICAGO, COLD MOUNTAIN, and JERRY MACGUIRE alongside Tom Cruise, just to name a few.
Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for more information on the intriguing premise for WHAT/IF as it develops. In the meantime, you can look for Zellweger when she stars as the legendary performer Judy Garland in Rupert Goold's JUDY, which is expected to bow some time in 2019.
