Reminiscence: Hugh Jackman-led sci-fi thriller to debut a week early

Releasing your movie at the right time is often paramount to its success. After all, the last thing you want is to be up against a heavy-hitter at the box office, lest your efforts get lost in the shuffle and piles of spilled popcorn. It's with this philosophy in mind that Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy's feature directorial debut Reminiscence is being pushed up to an August 20 release. The reason for the shift is so that Reminiscence doesn't clash with Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which is sure to win the box office over the Labor Day window. Reminiscence is going day and date in theaters and on HBO Max, making ticket sales all the more important to the film's success.

Directed and written by Lisa Joy, Reminiscence stars Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson, and Thandiwe Newton in a romantic sci-fi thriller where a scientist discovers a way to relive your past and uses the technology to search for his long lost love.

For a more detailed description of Reminiscence, you can check out Deadline's description below:

Reminiscence follows Nick Bannister (Jackman), a private investigator of the mind, who navigates the darkly alluring world of the past by helping his clients access lost memories. Living on the fringes of the sunken Miami coast, his life is forever changed when he takes on a new client, Mae (Rebecca Ferguson). A simple matter of lost and found becomes a dangerous obsession. As Bannister fights to find the truth about Mae’s disappearance, he uncovers a violent conspiracy, and must ultimately answer the question: how far would you go to hold on to the ones you love?

Cliff Curtis, Marina de Tavira, Daniel Wu, Mojean Aria, Brett Cullen, Natalie Martinez, Angela Sarafyan, and Nico Parker also star.

Originally, Reminiscence was up against Universal/MGM’s reboot of Candyman and Disney's documentary The Beatles: Get Back. However, even with the shift Reminiscence will still have some stiff competition as it goes up against the Maggie Q-Samuel L. Jackson-Michael Keaton action movie The Protege, and Paramount’s Paw Patrol.

Jackman recently released a brief teaser for Joy's upcoming film via Twitter:
