Sadly, theater shootings aren't anything new, but have seemed to pick up momentum this past summer. A screening of TRAINWRECK in Louisiana found itself victim to a shooter which resulted in three deaths. Earlier this month in Tennessee, a hatchet-wielding man injured two people before being killed by police at a screening of MAD MAX: FURY ROAD. Then, of course, there's that little shit in California who thought bringing a leafblower into a theater would be a good idea. Movie theaters have remained nearly security-free for some time but in the wake of these events, they will be making some changes. It looks like Regal Entertainment Group will be the first to act.
While extra security and even metal detectors have been spotted at screenings for STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON, the largest chain in America are permanently implementing bag checks for anyone entering their theaters.
Regal Theaters on their new policy:
Security issues have become a daily part of our lives in America. Regal Entertainment Group wants our customers and staff to feel comfortable and safe when visiting or working in our theatres. To ensure the safety of our guests and employees, backpacks and bags of any kind are subject to inspection prior to admission. We acknowledge that this procedure can cause some inconvenience and that it is not without flaws, but hope these are minor in comparison to increased safety.
Anyone checking their Facebook feed probably spot most folks worrying about their candy-sneaking habits, but this will undoubtedly be a turning point for how security will be handled in theaters going forward. Now, maybe it'll just be limited to bag checks and the occasional security guard for the time being, but ticket prices and public perception are bound to change.
How do you feel about Regal's new policy?
