These days, it’s not all that difficult for me to entertain the idea of Reese Witherspoon’s Ellle Woods, a fictional character, rising to the position of being the nation’s first lady president of the United States of America. What, you don’t think it could happen? Well, need I remind you that a vast majority of voters took to the polls by nominating the 17-year-old lowland gorilla, Harambe, as a write-in candidate? So yeah, do I think we could at least get Elle Woods on the ballot in some capacity? Yes, absolutely.
All joking aside (trust me, I could make a lot more), in a recent interview with E! News, actress Reese Witherspoon spoke about the possibility of doing a sequel to her empowered comedy film series, LEGALLY BLONDE.
During the interview, Reese had the following to say about her Elle Woods character, and what the future might hold for the forward-thinking, ultra-positive political power figure:
I need somebody really clever to come up with a great idea and we’ll do it.
She then added,
I do think it’s a good time to do it. I think women need that kind of positivity right now.
After Ms. Witherspoon voiced her enthusiasm about making a LEGALLY BLONDE 3, she continued the interview by expressing her concerns for women in the wake of a Trump presidency:
It’s a great privilege to be a woman in America. We have many rights and freedoms that a lot of women don’t have all over the world. I try to celebrate that. I try to live that to its utmost, particularly the freedom of speech, being able to express myself, create shows like this to show how important women are in our world. That’s what I try to focus on.
I've never seen any of the LEGALLY BLONDE films, but from what I've heard, they sound like fun and informative movies in their own special way. In watching a few clips online, I can certainly get on board with much of what Elle Wood's stands for in regard to the world being a more tolerant place in addition to the importance of women being heard not just in politics, but in all matters.
What do you all think? Do you like the LEGALLY BLONDE films? Do you think the timing is right for Elle Woods to make a triumphant return to theaters with her messages of protest, empowerment, and equal treatment for all citizens of the United States of America? I certainly hope so.
You can catch Reese Witherspoon as Madeline Martha Mackenzie in the upcoming HBO mini-series BIG LITTLE LIES. The comedy-drama created by David E. Kelley and based on the book of the same name by Liane Moriarty premieres February 19,2017.
