For those of you who love to swing by that magical red box to check out the latest movies and games, keep an eye out for an increase in rental prices taking place next week on December 2. DVD prices will increase from $1.20 to $1.50 per day with Blu-ray rentals increasing from $1.50 to $2 per day. For my fellow gamers, daily video game rentals will rise from $2 to $3. Of course, numbers may vary depending on location, but this will be the general prices for now. Technically, this represents the first price increase in Blu-rays and video games and only the second for DVDs (having increased from $1 to $1.20 in 2011).
Despite rental chains Blockbuster Video and Hollywood Video (among others) falling by the wayside, Redbox represented a different and efficient way to pick up and return movies on the go. While it doesn't hold a candle to the ease of use that streaming media services generally do, as long as Redbox can secure films that have yet to hit services such as Netflix or Amazon Prime, they can appeal to markets that are looking for the latest and greatest, as well as those who don't use streaming media services. Wait, is that a thing? Do those people exist?
