Jada Pinkett-Smith’s Red Table Talk returned to Facebook Watch this afternoon, and viewers hoping the now-infamous “Oscar slap” would be discussed were in for a letdown. Only a title card addressed the slap. According to Deadline, it read:
“Considering all that has happened in the last few weeks, the Smith family has been focused on deep healing… Some of the discoveries around our healing will be shared at the table when the time calls. Until then the table will continue offering itself to powerful, inspiring and healing testimonies like that of our incredibly impressive first guest.”
So there you have it. This probably shouldn’t come as a surprise as I’m sure that Will Smith and his family are still suffering the fallout from the slap and unpacking what happened. The same likely goes for Chris Rock, who was slapped by Smith following an unscripted joke where he compared Pinkett-Smith’s shaved head look to Demi Moore’s G.I. Jane. It was later revealed that Pinkett-Smith suffers from alopecia. To some, the tease that the “healing” will be shared at the table may seem exploitative, as it sounds like they’re using the fallout from the slap to promote their show. Then again, considering how much drama they’ve unpacked on the show in the past, it would probably seem weird if they didn’t address the slap at some point.
Meanwhile, the fallout continues for Will Smith, with Netflix distancing itself from his project, Fast & Loose, while Sony’s reportedly paused production on Bad Boys 4. However, some folks insist they would still happily work with Smith, including Michael Bay, who told Entertainment Weekly he would 100% work with him again. Do you think the incident should be addressed on Red Table Talk?
