Netflix is already claiming some bragging rights about their latest release, Red Notice, which was a pretty pricey investment at an estimated $200 million. Starring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot, the film is reportedly the most expensive film Netflix has made and it looks like it was money well spent because the movie is breaking some records for Netflix.
Per Netflix, Red Notice had the biggest opening day for a film in Netflix film history. Keep in mind, this declaration was made without any data to back it up so we are going to have to take their word for it. I can’t imagine Netflix would make such a claim without having the proof in the numbers but this can be the frustrating thing about reporting streaming success. Streamers aren’t necessarily transparent with their numbers so this is a bit of inconsistency when touting a triumph such as this one. That being said, Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot both shared the news on their respective Twitter pages and I’m sure Johnson is crafting an Instagram video as we speak to thank the fans for streaming the film this weekend. Red Notice, which was originally set to be distributed by Universal Pictures, began filming in early 2020 and the shoot managed to reach completion by November of the same year, despite the onset of the global pandemic. Johnson referred to the work being done on set to keep everyone safe as the “most aggressive health and safety Covid measures in all of Hollywood.” While many other productions suffered substantial film delays throughout the year due to the pandemic, Red Notice managed to keep on trucking virtually unscathed. Now that the film is seeing some success on Netflix, I’m sure all involved are even more proud of the hard work that went into making the movie.
Per the official synopsis from Netflix, “When an Interpol-issued Red Notice — the highest level warrant to hunt and capture the world’s most wanted— goes out, the FBI’s top profiler John Hartley (Dwayne Johnson) is on the case. His global pursuit finds him smack dab in the middle of a daring heist where he’s forced to partner with the world’s greatest art thief Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds) in order to catch the world’s most wanted art thief, “The Bishop” (Gal Gadot). The high-flying adventure that ensues takes the trio around the world, across the dance floor, trapped in a secluded prison, into the jungle and, worst of all for them, constantly into each other’s company. The all star cast is joined by Ritu Arya and Chris Diamantopoulos. Directed and written by Rawson Marshall Thurber (Central Intelligence, Skyscraper) and produced by Hiram Garcia, Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions, Beau Flynn’s Flynn Picture Co. and Thurber’s Bad Version, Inc., Red Notice is a stylish globe-trotting game of cat-and-mouse (and cat).”
