Rebel Moon: Zack Snyder taps Sofia Boutella to star in his Netflix Sci-fi film

Zack Snyder is at it again, folks, and this time he’s bringing Sofia Boutella (Atomic Blonde, Hotel Artemis) along for the wild ride. With his latest film Army of Thieves now on Netflix, it’s time for the fan-favorite director to set his sights on a new project. That project is Rebel Moon, which has recently set Sofia Boutella to star.

Directed and co-written by Snyder with Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad, Rebel Moon is set in a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius. They dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them take a stand against the Tyrant.

Snyder has been meeting with talented individuals for months while searching for the perfect actor to star in the lead role. After whittling it down to a small group of potential stars, Boutella managed to shine brighter than the rest. Sources close to the casting process say Boutella stunned Snyder with her audition, and that she made the choice easy in the end.

Boutella recently starred in Prisoners of the Ghostland opposite Nicolas Cage. Dubbed “the craziest film I’ve ever done” by Cage himself, Prisoners of the Ghostland revolves around a notorious criminal who must break an evil curse in order to rescue an abducted girl who has mysteriously disappeared. Directed by Sion Sono (Suicide Club, Cold Fish) and based on a script written by Aaron Hendry and Reza Sixo Safai, Boutella stars in the film as a character named Bernice. Prisoners of the Ghostland looks positively whacked and I can’t wait to see it. Thankfully, the film arrives on Blu-ray and Digital on November 16.
