After so many years spent in the DC Universe, it’s been exciting to see Zack Snyder tackling his own original projects once again. After the success of Army of the Dead, Snyder is returning to Netflix for Rebel Moon, an epic sci-fi fantasy movie that’s been assembling quite the cast. THR has reported that the latest members of Rebel Moon will be Rupert Friend and Stuart Martin.
Rebel Moon takes place on a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy which finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Belisarius. The desperate colonists dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand. Sofia Boutella will star as the mysterious young woman, with Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Doona Bae, Jena Malone, Ray Fisher, and more also starring in the movie. As for who Rupert Friend will be playing in Rebel Moon, THR says that he will be playing the lead antagonist, the man who leads the armies and will inevitably square off against Sofia Boutella’s character. Details about Stuart Martin’s character are unknown, but he’s also said to be playing one of the bad guys.
Rebel Moon originally began life as a Star Wars pitch a decade ago, but has since been retooled as an original sci-fi universe. “”This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan,” Snyder has previously said. “It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.” Zack Snyder will direct the film and he also co-wrote the script with Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad.
Zack Snyder will also produce alongside Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller through their Stone Quarry production banner, with Eric Newman of Grand Electric also producing the project. Production on Rebel Moon is expected to get underway this April and will last until November. Rupert Friend will next be seen starring alongside Ewan McGregor in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, which will premiere on Disney+ on May 25th. As for Stuart Martin, he was recently seen starring in Army of Thieves, the prequel to Snyder’s Army of the Dead.
